Child molester draws 12-year sentence
Updated:03:14 a.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2009
BRIDGEPORT - A man with a record of molesting boys in Maine was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison for molesting two Fairfield boys whose parents he met at a local office services store where he was working.
"Twelve years is ridiculously lenient," one of the Fairfield boy's father told the judge, his voice cracking with emotion.
"My child will never be the same, he is serving a life sentence. I just hope we don't look back at this day and say we should have done better," said the father, identified in court only as Eric W. to protect the identity of his son. "This animal, predator, should be taken off the face of the earth."
Paul Sykes, his long hair tied in a ponytail, sat at the defense table staring straight ahead. Asked by Superior Court Judge Richard Comerford Jr. if he had anything to say, Sykes stood and partially faced the victim's father.
"It's hard listening to what has been said today," he said in a soft voice. "I am sorry the boys were hurt; none of this was ever intended."
"Never intended this to happen," the judge murmured in response. "Subjecting children to this type of crimes is inexcusable, it scars them for the rest of their lives."
He sentenced the 37-year-old Sykes to 20 years in prison, suspended after he serves 12 years, and followed by 35 years of probation. In addition to registering as a sex offender, the judge ordered Sykes to have no contact with children, "at all."
Sykes, of Springhill Lane in Bethel, previously pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor and possession of child pornography.
Convicted in 1989 of sexually assaulting children in his native Maine, Sykes worked until his arrest in October 2005 at the FedEx Kinko's store on the Post Road in Fairfield. Police said Sykes met the mother of one of his victims in September 2005 when she came to the store and told her he had his own computer repair business. After Sykes repaired her computer, the mother recommended him to the second victim's mother, police said.
Sykes apparently did something to the computers, police said, which required him to return to the boys' homes for more repairs. Sykes allegedly offered to show the two boys, ages 8 and 12, about computers.
Sykes molested the boys while he was left alone with each of them in their rooms, police said. One of the mothers became suspicious when she caught Sykes swimming nude in their pool with her son, police said. When confronted, Sykes apologized to the mother, police said, and told her skinny dipping is widely accepted in his native Maine.
Senior Assistant State's Attorney Cornelius Kelly told the judge Sykes has not accepted responsibility for what he did to the two children.
"He told a counselor his crimes have given him the same satisfaction as mountain climbing," he added.
Police said in 1989 Sykes was convicted in Maine of having sexual relations with three boys. He served a prison sentence but in 1994 was re-arrested for violating probation by communicating with minors on the Internet. In 1997, Sykes was arrested again for violating probation when he was found in a cemetery in Maine with two 16-year-old boys, court records show.
After he was released from prison in Maine, Sykes moved to Connecticut. Maine authorities never notified Connecticut authorities that Sykes was a convicted sex offender there.
The father of the 8-year-old boy told the judge he was upset that FedEx Kinkos didn't do a record check before hiring Sykes. The family has filed a lawsuit against FedEx Kinkos in Superior Court, charging the company could have prevented the sexual assault if it had conducted even a cursory check of Sykes' background.
