John Philip Michael Hartleroad AKA Chip is a dangerous pedophile and former registered sex offender who, in one breath, says he doesn't have a problem; and in the next, talks about how he was not truthful about being a boylover when taking a lie detector test to fulfill the terms of his sentencing.

John Philip Michael Hartleroad AKA "Chip" is a known pedophile, former registered sex offender and a member of BoyChat since the early 1990s. The drag queen community that he is involved with in Indiana (under the name of "Cleo") likely has no idea that a pedophile activist stands beside them.

John recanted to the readers of Boychat exactly what happened to him several years ago. In the late 1990s, he stated that he met a 15-year-old boy online. According to John, they talked on the phone, chatted and exchanged mail over the course of several months and fell in love. In June 1997, John planned to go to the east coast to spend the 4th of July holiday with Jimf3, Green and Sensitive Stephen - all fellow Boychat posters. John said his young friend asked that he come and get him. In John's own words:

"I went one step further, I bought him a plane ticket back so he cold come live with me. He was so excited when I told him this. It was all he wanted was to live with me and be by my side forever.

On July 2, John picked up his young friend and they went to a motel to get some rest prior to meeting up with the other pedophiles from Boychat. After 4-5 hours at the hotel, the police came knocking on the door. John was arrested. The state did not pursue charges against him, but the federal authorities did, because it involved interstate travel. He claims the federal judge took pity on him, saying that he did not think John was a predator, and should not be judged as one. But yet - sentenced him to jail and required him to register as a sex offender at the time. From December 1997 through 2001, John was in local jails and a minimum security federal penitentiary.

After serving his prison sentence, he was required to attend counseling. The only thing - in his words - that he learned, was that there are people out there who could benefit from this type of counseling. However, he doesn't feel he needed it. "I don't see that I have a problem." He completed his probation in 2004 and is no longer required to register as a sex offender. He openly admits that he was not truthful about being a boylover when taking a lie detector test to fulfill the terms of his probation and be released from registry status.

His story, as told on Boychat, matches that of a newspaper article in the Plattsburg, NY Press Republican (July 9, 2000) written about the crackdown on internet pedophiles. The story states, in part -

"That same year, John Hartleroad of Indiana began conversing over the Internet with a 15-year-old boy living in Kingston. Hartleroad then traveled to New York state on July 2, 1998, took the boy to a Kingston motel and had sex with him."

Further investigation corroborates the facts in that article as well as the statements made by John on Boychat and shows that he pled guilty to one county of Receiving Sexually Explicit Material Involving a Minor. He was ordered to serve a 30-month prison sentence and receive sex offender treatment. John Hartleroad was released from custody in December, 2001 and Chip has also stated the same on Boychat.

On August 21, 2007, John responded to a message on a newsgroup, where a 14-year-old boy was looking to chat with boylovers. John said he would love to talk with the boy. That post was traced to Bloomington, Indiana. (see http://groups.google.com/group/alsafafy/msg/1670f4194fd0eb9e?pli=1)

Not only is he a free man, but he continues to entice and interact with young children over the internet. As of March, 2008 he was actively trading pictures of children on a website known to engage in the exchange of child pornography.

Using contact and other information from his Boychat posts we were led to other various user names and online identities.
The online identities then led to real-life location and personal information.
The real-life information was checked against publicly-available information, which led us to his sex offender registry entry and information relating to the events which caused him to be placed on the registry.
