Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was the former crown prince (that is the next male in line of monarchical succession) of the Nepalese monarchy, who for seemingly no reason other than for the lulz, decided to kill his entire immediate family, and then himself. His actions would end up wiping out all the direct heirs to the Nepalese crown, leading to massive political and social ramifications in the country, including the eventual, formal abolition of the Nepalese monarchy in 2008. Despite this incident being totally mental, this massacre went largely under the radar after a few months because of 9/11, much like everything else that happened in 2001.
Background
Dipendra seemingly had it all. He was set to be king. Had a girlfriend, something you will never have. He had fancy cars and lived in a freaking castle. He traveled the world and even chauffeured Princess Diana once in said fancy cars, and didn't annihilate her in the process. He graduated with good grades, was supposedly kind and gentle to everyone he met, and was very popular among his country's population.
Why Dipendra decided to go for the high score is unclear. The most popular theory is that he had an Indian girlfriend named Devyani Rana who either his father or girlfriend's parents refused to allow him to marry, which infuriated Dipendra into running amok. Another theory suggests that he did it because he was infuriated at the shift from the absolute monarchy that his grandfather founded to a constitutional monarchy in 1990. However the most likely reason he did it was because he was angry at God for naming his country after nipples.
Shooting
Diprendra spawned in the Narayanhiti Palace map, selecting his personal residence as his start location. Before doing anything, he consumed the cocaine and booze that he had in his inventory for incredible buffs. He then walked through the map, where the palace guards were mysteriously lacking, shooting family members and palace staff. The NPC's were hosting a party in the dining room, where Dipendra got most of his frags. Inside the palace walls, Dipendra was practically unopposed, however a few NPCs outside became alerted to the sound of gunshots. Before the anyone could reach him, Dipendra, who was right-handed, shot himself in the left side of the head for some reason.
By the end of his run, Dipendra had killed the king and queen of Nepal, who were also his father and mother. He also killed his brothers and sisters, and finally himself, ensuring that there was no direct line of succession.
For being such an hero, Dipendra was awarded by being crowned the new king of Nepal, but only for 3 days in a comatose state before his game decided to stop lagging and finally give him the Game Over screen. He was succeeded by his uncle, Gyanendra, who was for some reason absent from the palace the day of the massacre, where his wife was wounded.

Who ACTUALLY did it?
Ask any Nepalese person about the massacre and they will call you a fucking idiot if you think that Dipendra actually shot first. Between all the suspicious events and lack of solid motive, he was clearly just a pawn in a far bigger game. The most likely, true culprit is the shooter's uncle, Gyanendra, who became king following his death. While the entire families of the king and the shooter were killed, nobody in Gyanendra's family died. Additionally, Gyanendra initially claimed the event was just a silly accident, which a subsequent investigation evidently disproved. Furthermore, Gyanendra didn't allow any more investigations, even by professionals who offered to do it for free. And if this wasn't silly enough, just take into consideration that Dipendra was totally doped out and still managed to kill 9 people with decent accuracy using the pro 1-2 technique; one bullet to the chest, then the face. Some say that true shooter was actually a hired assassin with a replica mask of Dipendra's face.
And if Gyanendra didn't do it, then the Maoists definitely had a hand in it. They had been stirring shit up in the country for a while and heavily advocated for democracy. EW! The crown prince suddenly killing off all the heirs to the monarchy would be a very good cover story for people to believe if they wanted to rile up support for their faction. Not long later they were able to pressure Gyanendra into abdication and abolish the monarchy. But let's not be unfair here, because the Maoists have offered their own theories for who shot first. They claim it was the CIA and Paki intelligence that pulled the strings here.
Whether this was the work of the CIA, a greedy uncle, or a rival faction is unknown, but if there's one thing that's for sure, it's that something certainly glows here.
