Bowsette
Bowsette is the anthropomorphized gender-swapped transformation of Bowser. Bowsette has reached much undeserved popularity on the internets because the internet is lobbied by weebs, and because weebs cant get enough of that cross-dressing action, there is of course a lot of Rule34 of this fan-character. Some people actually like to argue that Bowsette should appear in an official mario game, but that will never happen because they seem to forget that Super Mario is a family-friendly franchise with no room for smutty content, save for the occasional subtle reference to Princess Peach's "XXX" or "Vibe Sceptor".
Origin
After the failure of the Wii U, Nintendo decided to port New Super Mario Bros. U onto the Nintendo Switch, but first they had to think of ways to make the game even worse than it was: and alas came the introduction of the super crown, a power up that can only be picked up by Toadette and transforms her into a new character named Peachette. Now you can only play with TWO players unless you want one player to be invincible or be incredibly prone to picking up an overpowered (but lame) power up.
Inspired by that game, Bowsette first appeared in a comic strip made by Ayyk92, which depicts Mario and Bowser being rejected by Princess Peach, so Bowser decides to put on the tranny crown and go out with Mario in order to make Princess Peach jealous. For anomalous reasons, Bowsette reached unprecedented amounts of popularity and now has TONS of Rule34.
Other iterations
With the rise of Bowsette's popularity, weebs wanted to take the tranny crown off of Bowser and give it a go at some other Mario characters. Booette would become perhaps the most popular of these iterations, but there is also Chain Chompette, Piranhette, and probably more, for the internet is a very deep series of tubes.

Before Bowsette
Before Ayyk92 created Bowsette, Minus8 (who is a confirmed pedo but ignore that and look at shygals tits) made the shy gals, which were a popular (and arguably superior) meme in themselves during older internets; and no need to worry, these gals arn't tranny.
