Visual Novel

A visual novel is a video game genre with Japanese roots. It is a self-insert medium play by people with no lives. It generally has prerendered backgrounds with text, accompanied sometimes by voice acting. Typically in these games the player is presented with various decisions that controls the ultimate outcome of the narrative. These decision points convince the fat man sitting on the computer playing these games that have any real agency in their empty lives within the basement.

Not to be confused with dating sims. Those actually have gameplay.
