Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is a beyond confusing "horror" mystery visual novel series written by Ryukishi07. In a nutshell, Higurashi is what happens when a game of lolita Clue goes horribly wrong. It's what happen when a freelance doujin author tries to go experimental and vents his POOR POOR childhood of not being allowed to play videogames into a clusterfuck of a visual novel where animu teenagers and loli's go insane and kill each other because aliens. While this work wasn't the worst despite the authors obvious inability to draw, it was adapted into a god awful anime with even worse artwork which gave it an unholy cult following of batshit insane bipolar 14 year girls on deviantart who draw pretentious pictures of the characters and screencap scenes from the anime to turn them into obnoxious demotivation posters about the characters killing people because someone stole their waffles. For that reason, this page will mostly focus on the anime.

The Plot

Basically this show starts off like a terrible low budget Harem. You got the stereotypical harem male lead who has a tendency to be a complete idiot.

The Cast

• Keiichi Maebara: The male lead, and also a closet pedophile. He has a bizarre fetish for roleplaying as a sniper and shooting unsuspecting little girls with his air gun.
• Rena Ryuguu: Token batshit insane character. There are 3 sides to her:
  • The "nice" side that takes anything she finds cute from dressed up loli's to Colenal Sanders statues and drags them home (or literally to her secret van) to be raped.
  • One thats an ace detective who notices EVERY FUCKING RIDICULOUS DETAIL yet somehow never notices those creepy men in suits who hang around.
  • One thats just straight up crazy, violent, and has bullshit MacGyver skills to turn gasoline and an egg timer into a god damned time bomb.
• Mion Sonozaki: The token tits of the group. She is like a reverse trans; She calls herself "Uncle Mion" and refers to herself in all terms as a boy yet secretly freaks the fuck out when she's treated like one.
• Shion Sonozaki: Mion's identical twin sister. Since this is anime, the series exploits the fuck out of this fact. Like Mion is a girl who acts like a boy, Shion is an extreme guro tier sadist who acts like a cute girly girl.
• Satoko Houjou: One of the two lolis of the show who has probably been raped by her uncle and parents several times and been generally abused. This abuse has obviously turned her into a zombie, because how else can you explain how she survived being stabbed by a knife like 20 times until finally being stabbed in the head? She gets her own chapter later on where her and Keiichi form an unhealthy "brother and sister" relationship that abruptly ends when she uses her unnatural zombie strength to shove him off a bridge. She also has the bullshit ability to set traps that even fucking trained government agents somehow fall into.
• Rika Furude: The other loli. She lives with Satoko, which is just an excuse to give the fanbase something to write godawful fanwork involving their own personal lolli sex fantasies for. She's actually on a secret quest with Hanyuu, to discover why she keeps on getting kidnapped and having her stomach slashed open. Because she has to relive her entire life from the beginning every time Hanyuu rewinds time, she's actually lived for over a century. You would think by then that she would have figured out everything, BUT NOPE. 100 years later and she still doesn't know all details!
• Hanyuu: A third loli introduced in the second half of the story, who's actually the spirit Oyashiro. Like any anime, she acts as a ghost that looks after Rika as her guardian, at least she's supposed to if she weren't such a fucking stupid cunt all the time. For a deity that can control the very fabric of space and time, she's had to revive Rika from the dead a million different times. Seriously, Hannyu is the worst guardian spirit ever, and is possibly one of the most annoying things in existence.
• Takano: The complete mastermind behind everything, and all because no one would acknowledge her grandfathers studies on Hinamizawa syndrome because someone who had it indirectly triggered the second Sino-Japanese war. That's right, Ryukishi poorly connected this clusterfuck of a story in a cringe worthy fashion to one of the origins of World War 2. The author drives away fan speculation that she's actually the mastermind behind everything by making it way too bloody obvious that she's the villain so the fans will think it's someone else, then saying in every time loop that she got burned to death, when that was someone else who we'll never know.
• Irie: Straight up pedophile, and he gives absolutely zero fucks about it. He will tell anyone outright that he wants to marry Satoko when she hits legal age. The show tries to distract you from this by developing his character to show that he really hates to see Satoko go through abuse and legitimately cares about her (because by anime logic that totally makes it okay) but then he goes straight to chasing Satoko and Rika around trying to fit them in perverted clothes.

The Infamous Artwork

The thing that's special about Higurashi is that there is no universal way to draw the characters, that's because Ryukishi07 can't draw for shit and the anime version botched the characters into one of the ugliest art and animation styles of all time. So everytime someone makes any adaption of Higurashi, they change the drawing style YET AGAIN, and at least half the time it looks ugly as shit.
