The Sopranos is a paraphysical television series centred around an intentionally mentally obfuscated psychological drama between Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) and Vic Macasian, a corrupt official looking to bribe his way out of a gambling debt by threatening to devolve the main character's reality into a horrifying paroxysm of the Italian-American mafia subculture. The show deals with heavy subject matters such as mental usury, guns, and grey matter depletion.

While some critics lauded David Chase's invention of a television series putting a seldom-heard-about multicultural sea terminal on the map, most disparaged the series' crassly experimental concepts employed only for spectacle's sake, lacking meaning as a narrative device. The performances of Joe Pantoliano and Al Pawlowicz were nominated for BAFTAs, once in 2002 and 2007 respectively.
