There's actually quite a number of these already on ED...although a lot of them are disgusting pedo-related shit. They use different forms too, like seemingly corrupted images but if resaved with a particular bit depth then you can see the image. Or using CTRL+A in Internet Explorer, like nyah:

image hosting redux

This discussion has been linked to on a non-ED project. We welcome all editors here at ED, but please remember to stay mellow.

there is a discussion at commons about internet meme images and whether wikimedia commons should host them. some people there feel that the images belong here, and i am inclined to agree. concerns about hotlinking can be dealth with, but we should be a repository for these kind of images. if i need an image of Grumpy Cat or similar, this is where i would look, not wikimedia commons. -hipcrime 18:46, 8 March 2013 (EST)

Also a good idea when you factor in content yet to be uploaded. I'm hoping to slowly merge entire sections of my uber massive Data Archive into ED (roughly three million images), which will effectively make ED one of the largest repositories of meme related material on the grid.

One potential idea, instead of simply blocking hot-linking out right, would be to redirect hot-links to a copy of the image with a site/branding tag, similar to what 9Gag and others have started doing.

As others have said, ED is likewise one of the best sources since we tend to put more effort into finding original source material, rather than copies of copies of copies that have been resized and resaved so many times they look like they've been through a washing machine.

I did hear from a friend that supposedly the language is going to be 'clarified' to indicate that only advertising is covered by this. Which is a whole other kettle of fish, since banning excessively sexually suggestive or even sexually explicit advertising in public and semi-public arenas is different to banning porn. It doesn't show up as "unused content" so a lot of it is being over-looked. How would that be done? I've been meaning to mention something like this somewhere, like on the Wiki section of the Forums, about re-making/updating the 4chanarchive template since, as it's been mentioned, it doesn't work anymore: it redirects 4chanarchive threads to a chanarchive page that is a 500 error page. Actually, right now I tried a link from the Template:4chanarchive and it doesn't even redirect me to the chanarchive. Yet another glaring piece of stupidity that makes me seriously question the competency of Weev's legal defense. If that's true, that would actually WORK AGAINST the prosecution! It would be like trying to cite something said on COMEDY CENTRAL as if it were a NEWS STATION! ED is a satirical/parody site...not a serious/news oriented tech site. Honestly, if shit they slurped up off ED was all the ~better~ the prosecution could muster...yeah...they shouldn't have won...not unless Weev had a shit grade lawyer.

He ~should~ have gotten legal help from the EFF right off the bat. Had he done that, he very likely wouldn't have been convicted. I think his defense also fucked up by dragging things out. Jurors have SHORT attention spans (especially when it comes to "complicated" tech things), so very often it's best to keep things as exceptionally simple as possible and use very simple, easy to understand comparisons to break apart the prosecutions case.

Instead he did this completely retarded thing of trying to paint himself up as some kind of a white hat hacker who was "helping people" and then droned on for days on end trying to "justify" the action. Instead, he should have simply said that nothing he did was even remotely hacking (which it wasn't) and that all he did was basically stumble across an open directly on a website, copied out the contents and then sent them a news agency. BOOM! End of case! Seriously, they could have summed up the entire thing and rested the case in less than an HOUR!

By playing it out for ~so~ freakin long the jurors were basically deluded into thinking that the case was some monumental, intellectual conundrum of incredibly serious moral and ethical issues, rather than a simple matter of insanely idiotic stupidity on the part of the prosecution.

I do have to wonder though whether or not the conviction is exactly what Weev ~wanted~...I mean at this point he can basically publish a book and it'll be a near instant best seller in tech circles. Essentially making a kind of martyr out of himself, to gain nth level notoriety and publicity, I can't help but wonder if he purposefully botched his own legal defense.

Do you need hardware? Cause I've got quite a lot of stuff I'm not using that I could donate. Especially hard drives, lots of those, IDE and SATA drives, not sure on the speeds, mostly in the 250 to 500 gig range...although most of them have bad clusters, anywhere from less than a dozen to a few hundred. Generally whenever one of my drives develops any bad sectors at all I immediately buy a brand new drive. They would work well though in a redundant\backup RAID setup. I've also got a gigantor server box I could donate. It's about six years old, but still pretty powerful. It's an MSI E7505 Dual Xeon server workstation board, with two 2.4Ghz Intel Xeon processors and 1GB of Infinion dual channel, ECC, PC-3200 400MHz memory. You'd have to cover the shipping cost for it though (it's a BIG sucker).

It's generally a matter of whether they've openly posted their own dox at some point (by accident or on purpose), or if they're readily/publicly available/accessible (like posted on a business website or openly available WHOIS domain data). If they've essentially "outed" themselves then there's not really any reason their dox can't be on the article, otherwise it's best to use PasteBin. What's In A Name...

What the hell should we call these? I've got a huuuuge freakin folder of about 500 of the lil buggers, spanning everything from operating systems, to game consoles, to websites to even NASA space craft/satelites. o_O

Originally it was just operating systems and people called them OS-Tans (cutesy way of using the "chan" suffix), but that doesn't really work anymore. They're basically Moe Mascot Anthromorphs (that's what TOW calls them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_anthropomorphism ). So maybe like AnthroTans? AnthroMoe? Or just MoeTans? I've also seen the cutesy/nickname suffix "ko" used on occasion (like in this example). So like KoMoe or MoeKo could also work. Or AnthroKo. *shrugs* Any other ideas?

I say the OS-tan article could use an overhaul/expansion (@Onideus - a few galleries of some of the highlights from your picture collections would be great). It's an official meme by now (Nanami Madobe = i.e. - the Windows 7-tan with it's own Microsoft Japan theme and voice actor, anyone?), and I heard Windows 8 has one by now as well. Hell, the Wikipedos have a better article than we do on OS-tans at present. However, I say we keep the original name since the "original" anthro-tan that started this shit was "ME-tan", and then it just went on from there, so every other -tan is just a spinoff of that.
