Main Page Timers SOLVED

  • This is my rendition of the main page: here.

To break it down, the way it works is as follows:

First, for an XOTN, we need to check if a page exists for the current day, using the {{#ifexist:pagetitle|output1|output2}} parser function. If the page pagetitle exists, MediaWiki will output output1, ELSE if it doesn't exist, output output2. All this really is, is a simple if/else/elseif block. 

{{#ifexist: Encyclopedia Dramatica:Article of the Now/{{LOCALMONTHNAME}} {{LOCALDAY}}, {{LOCALYEAR}} | {{Encyclopedia Dramatica:Article of the Now/{{LOCALMONTHNAME}} {{LOCALDAY}}, {{LOCALYEAR}}}}

Does a page for the current date exist? Output the XOTN page of the current date as a template.

If an XOTN page for the current date doesn't exist, let's check if an XOTN page from one week ago exists. In code, this would be the elseif part of the block.

Does an XOTN page one week back from the current time exist? If yes, use that. ELSE if that doesn't exist, we'll use the XOTN from TWO weeks ago, should it exist. And unlike the previous step where we used an elseif-like construct to check if an XOTN page from only one week existed, here we are simply outputting the XOTN from two weeks ago, whether it exists or not. If an XOTN from two weeks ago doesn't exist, we'll simply get a redlink error.

So, that's about it. I decided to help because I saw you were struggling with it in the sandbox. Hopefully this rendition works as intended.

Finding certain things in archive.

So, is there a special way that we have to enter some of the pages into web.archive.org to find them? Like for example the sources of articles? How will we be able to find that stuff?   • Sorry, I meant to reply a lot sooner. I am currently scraping the web archive. Articles should be done in about a week, not sure if we will publicly release those archives. But they will deffo be given to the wiki Admins. Images are another issue, the scraper is not processing those correctly so I will have to keep working on a solution. UMK ✎♛ 01:17, 22 May 2021 (EDT)

The GNA/BNA/Did You Know categories HAVE to be updated more.

Many of the GNA articles are not new (there old as fuck) some of the BNA ones are also old as fuck and the DYK is similar. It's a lack of attention that is paid to the GNA/BNA/DYK that concernes me, and I belive that that should be fixed. I already did some purging of the {{GNA}} category, which was mostly artilces I restored, and I'm thinking of adding some more articles in GNA, but you get the point. Sure, you should already have access. I also upgraded you to editor. First, a couple of points. Except for Holidays, we don't usually set the XOTN more than a week in advance because news may break. Second, the XOTN should be current news or interest. Third, you need to make sure the XOTN archive is updated. The last one is what people skip. It only takes a minute to update the archive with a title. The POTN is a tiny bit different as you need to update the thumbnail too. Good luck. UMK ✎♛ 21:39, 13 November 2021 (EST)

XOTN protection

i set the AOTN for today and tomorrow which isn't something non-editors/admins should be able to do. we used to use cascading protection but idk if that's still a thing anymore (don't know what version of mediawiki ed uses) so the pages should probably at least be mass protected when they're made Schnitzel (talk) 15:43, 7 January 2022 (EST)
