Yesterday I wrote a script that generates a category, template and portal report. What does that mean? Say someone adds the TV template to an article but forgets to add the article to the TV portal. That one really is a blatant attack article from one group of tweenage DevianTartlets to another. The small clique of 12 year olds she's pissing off by tracing their work are actually more lulzy than she is. Also the tags often provide good motivation. I normally tell people that they can have the tag taken off when they put in some more effort into making the article better. Otherwise they often just get complacent with its crap level of quality and give up editing it altogether in about a week. If you leave those tags on though they'll put in a good solid months worth of edits to improve it...or they'll simply give up entirely at that point, which is a clear indication that the article should have never been made in the first place (cause if they don't care, no one else is going to care for them). --Onideus 23:27, 3 August 2013 (EDT)

Depends on the article subject/history. I don't tag without actually looking into the subject of the article itself. If you take the effort to actually look at what the subject is doing, how they're posting, how people are reacting to them, etc, etc...you can make a pretty definitive determination as to whether it's a blatant attack article or not. Also, actually reading the article helps. And yes, an article where the ONLY point of attack is "they're tracing my friends work"...is a blatant attack article...and actually goes AGAINST what ED stands for, since tracing in general, especially tracing the artwork of DevianTartlets incites MASSIVE levels of DRAMA...which is a good thing...well, for us. The very fact that such tracing incites them into coming here in DROVES to try and make blatant attack articles over their traced "art" (read: worthless tripe) is proof positive that the tracers are effectively working for us. We're not an attack site, it's not our job to go after "art stealers", it's our job to incite/promote/document DRAMA.
Also, that article has been up for four days now...if they actually ~had~ any worthwhile content, aside from "they stoled my stuffs"...pretty sure we'd have seen it by now. *shrugs*

Here's my thoughts on this. Don't interfere with people unless you're being constructive. Let them finish, if it's shit or a personal attack article (better go tag all 2000 of them), decide that when it's done. Well we used to just outright shit can such articles the second they were effectively aborted. At this point we basically "tag and bag". We don't burn the crap on site, but we ~do~ tag it...which is important...ya know so they show up in the little lists and then you can go through by date every month or so and determine whether it needs to be removed (I usually give them one to three months depending on the subject).
The problem is that if we DON'T tag blatant attack articles and they AREN'T improved then they wind up slipping through the cracks in droves and the site becomes inundated with shit/cancer. At present I'm actively monitoring/tracking roughly 50 different new articles...and those tags are of paramount importance in being able to do just that.
If you'd like to make or suggest some ~other~ tag, which can be used for bad article tracking I'd have no problem with that. The "shit" and "blatant attack article" tags though are, at present, the easiest to track (and the most descriptive).
In general I really don't think the 90s era "Generation Barney" form of coddling and giving them proverbial A+ for having an "A"ttitude that's +ositive is a very good idea. It generally breeds stagnation, mediocre quality, complacency, USI and a host of other self-destructive behaviors. Sometimes you just need to point blank tell someone, "This is shit!" If they get all indignant and flustered over it and "take their ball and go home", well, "nothing of value was lost". It might be a good idea to come up with some kind of actual rating system of sorts, which could be artificially generated based on a number of parameters/criteria. CodeHappy from PoE had some pretty interesting forum analysis scripts that could, for example, look at common/unique word/phrase forms/counts and could then generate "uniqueness stats". He even had one that tracked during which phase of the moon a person most often made their posts. I'll try and put up some examples here at some point, as well as put together some sample forms that could be used for manual article rating, like say a simple check off/radio button style form.
