Not to be confused with Ping.

PNG is an open image format created to replace the patent-ridden GIF format, hence the name: Pay No Gold (to the Jews).

PNG has been around since the mid 1990's, but you wouldn't have guessed this since Microsoft didn't start supporting it until the late 2000's, long after Firefox and Chrome. It has many advantages over GIF, such as more colors, semi-transparencies, and better compression. Because of this it is the preferred format for basement dwellers to store lolicon hentai.

Animations are possible via the APNG format, but nobody supports it. WEBM is preferred over APNG and animated GIFs, since they're just half-assed video formats anyway. Don't use APNG unless you also plan on installing Gentoo.
