Current Tasks

Feel free to pitch in any work we need done. We mainly need maintenance on XOTNs and the new portals, along with detailing any current shitstorms going on.

  1. As always, staff, please set XOTNs. Always ensure the next 3 days are set.
  2. Build up the Politics portal
  3. We need to have miniflag icons uploaded for every country possible, mainly for High Score.

"Copyright troll"

What's all this about then? Obviously you don't want to play your hand here, but some details about the alleged infringement could be helpful. Sidecar 13:21, 21 May 2017 (EDT)

If you want to do this on the cheap, you could always ask this guy if he knows of any paralegals who can look at your case and prepare some documents for you to file pro se. They wouldn't be your lawyers and therefore wouldn't be able to represent you in the courtroom, but that wouldn't matter, if filing those pleadings would get your case thrown out before it even got to that stage. Hopwood used to run such an outfit himself (not sure if he still does). Da bulls 19:44, 21 May 2017 (EDT)

Here's more infos on Kiwifarms about the guy in question. --Sd-100 16:03, 24 May 2017 (EDT)
this guy got all the money in the world, if I were him I would live in a remote mansion with 4 wives smoking weed all day long making love. Instead of this drama lol.--LIOD 23:23, 24 May 2017 (EDT)

Here is some info from our forum: https://forum.encyclopediadramatica.rs/threads/ed-is-being-sued-we-need-your-help.28864/ --Mantequilla (talk) 08:45, 25 May 2017 (EDT)

Smh I doubt this "lawsuit" will go anywhere. And as far as copyright laws go, isn't ED hosted in Sweden, or somewhere, that doesn't recognize U.S. copyright law? This just seems like another petty effort to take down ED. Pretty soon, Jonathan will get so desperate, he'll try to get his fellow Kiwis to DDOS us. Heat Sink 15:36, 26 May 2017 (EDT)
  • Yeah it'll probably be thrown out of the courtroom but ED still needs the money to get a lawyer or we lose by default (I think, I'm not too sure). SCHNITZEL RADDA RADDA 17:36, 26 May 2017 (EDT)
I'm not going to comment on the legalities of the issue, mainly because I'm not a lawyer . I'll observe that international copyright laws were harmonised by the Berne Convention, which is worth looking up. Anyways, I have given you some gold, even though you break my poor mother's heart. Will chip in more if and when I am able, even though - $50k? Where did you get that quote?? Sidecar 15:27, 30 May 2017 (EDT)
This guy isn't a copyright attorney. Doesn't fuckin' matter. Google the fucker. [1]—  VX  20:14, 30 May 2017 (EDT)
Got the quote from our lawyer. He is a thousand dollar an hour attorney and he thinks it will take about 80 hours since the other guy has a very expensive lawyer as well, that is a discount. --Mantequilla (talk) 05:48, 1 June 2017 (EDT)
It's not really a question of "the lawyer makes this much" or "the lawyer is paid this much". The point is when you're counter suing you want as much money as possible and, obviously, so does the lawyer. So if the lawyer says they get paid $1,000 an hour and it's going to take at least 80 hours of work, that basically translates to: "We're counter-suing for $80,000 in legal expenses."
If the lawyer said they were doing it for free or that they got paid minimum wage, then there would be no justifiable reason to counter-sue for lots of money in legal expenses.
That said, you didn't technically need a lawyer. This guy has done this before and lost. So all you had to do was look up the old cases where he lost and just copy and paste their shit nearly verbatim and you would have won. The point of having a lawyer though, in this case, is to try and inflict as much potential and possible legal damage to ensure the fuckstick doesn't ever do it again. Because that's just the way certain mallet heads are, they just don't learn unless they're financially crippled in the process. --Mimkrys 06:59, 1 June 2017 (EDT)

Earnestly agree. It's 2017, and only now are we using the latest, far superior version of mediawiki. Heat Sink 21:42, 1 June 2017 (EDT)

A lot of the templates are broken, the gallery expansion being the most important. The Photoframe one is broken too. No signature button when editing it seems... guess you have to put it in manually? Or does it do it automatically? --Mimkrys (talk) 21:42, 1 June 2017 (EDT)

That is because we are working on the server. --Mantequilla (talk) 06:47, 2 June 2017 (EDT)

Thumbnails fixed and youtube resolved, the only issue I see now is the hide/collapse on various templates (series, galleries) getting borked. I'm not sure if that's an extension or just really crafty wiki markup. Uberfukken (talk) 09:59, 2 June 2017 (EDT)

MediaWiki updated these items. [2] At the moment I don't know what the best solution is. Barth (talk) 10:14, 2 June 2017 (EDT)
Well that's not too bad, looks like they just changed the syntax. Probably an easy fix after it's been done once. I'll have some time this weekend so if nobody figures it out by tomorrow I'll take a crack at it. Uberfukken (talk) 10:21, 2 June 2017 (EDT)
It can be done. --JuniusThaddeus (talk) 11:48, 2 June 2017 (EDT)

Tasks

Good work on upgrading the MediaWiki software. As is obvious, there are a lot of bugs and broken scripts we need to fix. Please add in suggestions below.

Main Page

I rewrote that Main Page so that users with small screens don't have to scroll horizontally. Please report any problem so that we can look into them. --JuniusThaddeus (talk) 14:03, 3 June 2017 (EDT)

Search suggestions (resolved)

Problem: the sites format looks bad when not viewed in full-screen

Hide the sidebar in mobile. Takes up half the screen. Uberfukken (talk) 10:04, 2 June 2017 (EDT)

        • I found the new template worked but with examples of very long quotes the template needs a height adjustment. For example on the Tony Abbott page the template worked fine in the past but after the changes some lines of texts were placed over the top of each other a height change fixed it. I don't know if there are other uses of the template with this issue, but I imagine its a case of people fixing it as they find it, so no biggy. —Oblique (chats) 01:52, 13 June 2017 (EDT)
          • The overlapping is from people setting a strict "height" instead of using the more forgiving "min-height": [4], [5]. I've changed the examples used on the template page so that people copying the examples found there use "min-height" instead of "height". --JuniusThaddeus (talk) 09:59, 13 June 2017 (EDT)

Please! plaster CC-BY notices on EVERYTHING

If some copyright troll manages to win out by virtue of US law being designed to screw the poor, he's going to try to get copyright over the entire contents of ED, or whatever he can. Now to be sure, the site's current approach is, at least in part, to say that it's hosted in Ukraine which "doesn't recognize copyright law on the internet", and that's great, but the problem is, I'm not sure it's true, since I'm reading that the ED servers are really in the U.S., probably in the shadow of some FBI building like every other goddamned server on the entire "free, distributed Internet", I mean, you could drop one small North Korean nuke on Reston, VA and there would literally be nothing left on the Interwebs except a couple of old goatse pictures and Make.Money.Fast letters on some Windows 95 systems nobody remembered to update. But I digress, point is:

PLEASE, put CC-BY notices on EVERY SINGLE PAGE NOW. Then if (when) some court decides to hand over your rights to some fuckhead or other, the resurrectors can at least try to claim they have a right to copy the content. Not that that really works because they're poor and whoever doing the stealing will be rich, but it might faze the bastards a minute. I don't want them claiming that this page or that page wasn't public, hence is now their private fucking property; if something doesn't turn out to be fully released anyway, at least that stays with its "owner" and not with THEM. We didn't make all our glorious edits to have them be some dipshits' hood ornament. Remember -- this is an age of lords and serfs, so nobody worth speaking of owns anything that isn't free for everyone. Wnt (talk) 21:43, 10 June 2017 (EDT)

I can personally assure you that ED is not hosted in the US and its servers are not subject to Anglo style copyright law. In fact, the law of the land does not and cannot provide for the scenario you put forward. —  VX  22:05, 10 June 2017 (EDT)

User:VX Here's a recent case: [7] Someone filed a nasty review in Ripoff Report about a company. So the company sued the poster and got a judgment against him that found the post "false and defamatory" and assigned copyright to the company. They then tried to make Ripoff Report take it down, but that site refused; they claimed they had the copyright, but the court said the CC-license was irrevocable. I remember reading about a case where the suer didn't even find the original poster and got a default judgment without speaking to him at all - I don't remember if this was the one though. But it could have happened that way. I mean, when courts do default judgments, it's all a bunch of lawyers who know each other standing around talking and laughing and making plans for liquid lunch afterward, the only thing missing is anyone who gives a shit about the defendant. Some of you don't seem to understand how copyright registration works. The copyright office... the whole thing... it only exists because the constitution specifically says that it should exist. Meaning it does not actually serve any viable point or purpose and is in fact, largely, a joke. If you actually e-mail the US copyright office they will actually explain to you, at length, exactly how pointless and stupid they really are. Here's a couple fun excerpts...

The gist of it being that ANYONE can file a copyright claim with the US Copyright Office, even if you don't specifically own the copyright in question, you can register for anyone else, including yourself, even if you have no right to it and they will:

A. Not actually bother to check, at all, to see if you really are the owner or are even authorized by the owner to make the claim.

B. Not actually bother to check and see if an IDENTICAL copyright claim has already been made.

C. Will not do ANY fact checking, research or otherwise to even remotely determine the potential validity of any such claim entered into their database.

They openly and admittedly serve no quantifiable purpose whatsoever. They are literally keeping an arbitrary database of completely unsubstantiated, completely unverified claims/data which are constantly and continually abused in courts. The US copyright office is effectively a small child scribbling incoherently all over the walls expecting mommy Justice Department to continually clean up their messes. At best they're a waste of tax payer dollars, at worst they're a complex government level form of money laundering being rampantly abused at the expense of the American public. In short... they should not exist, they have no reasonable purpose or function whatsoever and, worst of all, they openly admit to this fact and operate under the delusion that it's somehow "normal" or "acceptable" simply because there's some random, most likely misinterpreted text in the Constitution.

You scribbling shit all over that idiot wall isn't going to serve any point because every single person on the face of the planet could all register THE EXACT SAME CONTENT and that idiot department won't even blink in the face of it. As far as they're concerned every piece of material ever produced, ever, could all be claimed by every person on the planet and they would not even give one fuck all in any direction.

TL;DR - Copyright registration serves no purpose other than to be used as a arbitrary, unsubstantiated, numerical point of reference when you're filing a lolsuit. It does not, in any way, hold ANY legal weight on its own. Period. --Mimkrys (talk) 00:29, 12 June 2017 (EDT)

I am not a lawyer, but the above makes the US Copyright Office sound like a freeman-on-the-land type of scam. A crash-course at the University of Google has provided me with a totally-valid Diploma of Learnings, which informs me that although the copyright office will usually just rubber-stamp any old crap that lands on their desks, the certificate is proof that a registration was made. It is not proof that the registration was obtained honestly and fairly. The key phrase is there there is a "rebuttable presumption of 410" - i.e., it's up to the plaintiff to prove to the court that the certificate was obtained falsely. Once you have proved that to the court's satisfaction, the IP thief's certificate instantly becomes worthless, and you've won your case. Obviously, this information is fuck all interest or indeed use to anyone reading it, but I had 10 minutes to kill while my dinner was cooking. Sidecar (talk) 18:57, 20 June 2017 (EDT)

SEO Is Slow

Used to be Google would pick up newly created ED articles in 1 to 3 days at most, even really obscure shit, now it's taking around a week for most of them to pop in (since the upgrade). Not sure if there's some way to speed that up. Might be different for featured articles (faster), I've only been keeping track of non-featured ones. --Mimkrys (talk) 15:38, 19 June 2017 (EDT)
