FTP is the protocol allows you to access, modify or delete files on a remote server. Nobody uses public ftp for entertainment today, because you can't add advertisement on peoples pages and make billions of dollars like Megaupload. However, FTP is useful for editing your website hosted on a remote server.

When the computer engineering meant something, people invented ftp so that people can exchange files efficiently with the smallest overhead, and FTP actually does what it's supposed to do. However, today nobody likes you to hotlink their files and they want to create virtual links to file, like filesdfsfaadad122342sdfs13111.php or file.php?virtualfilename="somesecretkeyasdasdlol" which returns a file on request and constantly changes the actual link to file in the database (the pages load links from databases, links are made with codes and the paramter the file returner script gets also changes, so you can't hotlink. Long story short, capitalism wants you to see ads, not use your own computer as a server and pay for services like megaupload and create fatass billionaires. Also, microsoft does not include IIS in the Windows non-pro editions so you can't setup your ftp easily today. BUT you can share files with msn messenger and see more ads, and upload, download, create more jobs for people who buy and sell servers in huge containers. Also, ftp is about your own freedom of file transactions without using an intermediate which will be enforced to delete your content on requests by the owner of the copyrights. It's serious shit.

If you have windows xp professional you can install internet information systems and learn to Network address translation and open your FTP port on your router to create a FTP server and then you will give your friends your address like ftp://your ip here and they will be downloading directly from your computer whatever you publish using IIS. If everybody had a public FTP folder, the world would be a better place.
