The mullet started in the 6th Century. It was popularized in the US around the 1960's, when some welsh guy named Tom Jones (who was popular with the ladies) styled his hair this way. Then David Bowie wore one. That's when it started to become popular with hair bands and Billy Ray Cyrus. The Beastie Boys wrote a song about it and that how it got the name "Mullet"

A mullet is a favored hairstyle of rednecks and hillbillies. A popular expression used to describe this hairstyle is: "Business in the front, party in the back." The people who choose this hairstyle think it makes them look cool...but we know that it makes them look uneducated and silly. It is a popular hairstyle in the south, and is mostly worn by men, although some women choose to style their hair in this manner. In Canada, it is called "Hockey Hair". This describes when the players let their hair blow in the wind during practice, where they don't wear helmets.
