I came across this 4chan post today, which responds to the question "i never understood why this strip was such a big deal on /v/. i just assumed the topic of a miscarriage was too tacky or something."

Here's the response, which I consider valuable for the article itself, but I couldn't find a good spot for it yet.

"Because the context of the era mattered. Nowadays people who weren't around don't get it because there's nothing to compare it to...sort of. But in the 00s, gaming webcomics were fucking EVERYWHERE, and the big ones were Penny Arcade and CAD. There were other moderate ones like PvP, VG cats or 8bittheatre, and a fuckton of shitty low effort comics popping up every day. But CAD was the second largest at the time and though I wouldn't say anyone treated B^U's work as literary genius, it was the online equivalent to a household name for video game webcomics. Now imagine this comic which largely relies on gag a day yuks starts trying to give its characters story arcs and make them relatable. It doesn't work, and B^U starts resorting to WORDS WORDS WORDS. This goes on for a few years and everyone is sick and tired of it, especially because fuckley is an egotistical cunt who touted himself as the face of video games. No, seriously, he had a recurring series of comics where he literally crowned himself the king of video gamers. He had a cringe inducing comic where he got mad at Jack Thompson and pulled the full internet tough guy routine on him, like the navy seals copypasta but years before. Oh, he also had an indicent where members of his forum found out he showed his dick to an underage girl. He also threatened real life legal action against a kid who drew fanart of his characters. This sounds like satire but I swear to god it's not. But then B^U is writing a story about his IRL girlfriend's miscarriage. It's so out of place in a webcomic about video games, so pathetic, and incredibly funny because it came out of left field. The closest thing we have nowadays are ecelebs on youtube doing crazy shit like boogie pulling a gun outside his front door, but even that isn't close to the fall from grace that B^U had. Loss will be eternally funny to oldfags because it's the pinnacle of schadenfreude. B^U is a cunt and deserves all the ridicule he gets."
