Gauntlet

Gauntlet is a shitty fantasy-themed multiplayer action game that was developed by the Jews over at Atari and released in the form of a quarter-gobbling fraud-machine in October, 1985. The game was later ported to consoles such as the NES, but was strangely absent from any of Atari's consoles – most likely because Gauntlet was a blatant ripoff of a 1983 game called Dandy by John Howard Palevich and they got fucking sued over it. Instead, Atari consoles were given a game called Dark Chambers which—while an even bigger ripoff of Dandy than Gauntlet ever was—actually included proper credit to Palevich. Legend has it that Atari also bribed Palevich by giving him a Gauntlet arcade cabinet.

Gauntlet is one of the earliest examples of the pay to win mentality that has been poisoning gaming, except that it's impossible to actually win at Gauntlet.
