Pop up hell
Seriously, WTAF is going on here? It used to be that a few clicks into the site and these things would stop. Now (as of the last 24 hours) they continue throughout a site visit, and nearly every other page, more or less doubling the number of clicks needed (because each pop up browser cancels out the click you were trying to make). And instead of just one hostage-taking ad that tries to force you to download something, there are now about four of them ("Click 'add' to close this page" etc). Ad blocker doesn't stop them, and I have no idea what to do. They are making each visit into a frustrating and borderline-hostile experience. Any advice? Sidecar 21:58, 29 November 2016 (EST)
- Use the NoScript pluggin. --Onideus 22:07, 29 November 2016 (EST)
- I don't know if that's a reasonable option. I had to fight through four popups just to post this simple response. That seems very excessive. - Zew0 23:04, 1 December 2016 (EST)
- Basically, that would having to be like asking our readers to install a special script so they aren't bombardment on each click. Sounds implausible and a detriment to site traffic, IMO. - Zew0 23:18, 1 December 2016 (EST)
- I personally believe that getting a base64 popup everytime I try to edit or even merely use the fucking scrollbar actually affects productivity. What the fuck? (talk) 14:20, 2 December 2016 (EST)

- How bad is it? - Zew0 00:14, 3 December 2016 (EST)
- It's fine, if this is what's gonna keep the site alive, then I'll bear with it. ••General Niggerson 00:33, 3 December 2016 (EST)
- be careful. if your ads are sustaining your site but deterring your userbase, you won't have a userbase for long, and then the ads won't even give money. It's a death spiral. Mike the Great (talk) 05:44, 3 December 2016 (EDT)
- It is just a test run right now. We are still trying to figure it out. --Mantequilla (talk) 00:56, 3 December 2016 (EST)
- these ads are fucking with ad block so it can't work. it is ridiculous. reply 08:47, 3 December 2016 (EST)
- I think Mike has it right, here. If I were a naive first-time visitor one of those hijack ads would be enough to make it my last, and for me to warn others to stay away. A donation drive right now would be helpful even if it only reduced the need for readers to go through this never-ending ordeal. Buy a bit of breathing space. Work out what would suffice over the coming year, stick up a begging letter, and I'll toss in $20 with a smile. Do we know of any children in Africa, for example? Sidecar 11:02, 3 December 2016 (EST)

- Or make a pop-up browser open every time that anyone clicks anywhere, telling readers in big flashing letters that if they hate pop up ads then they should donate in order to stop them. How 2 COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN Any Amerikan University
1) Secure the services of an adept spammer. You're not going to be spamming (i.e. you are not going to be sending unsolicited commercial email) but it can't hurt to be careful.
2) Spam every professor and staff in the university with following email: "I heard XXX raped YYY". Embellish with details about where the party was. (if she's raped, it's a party by definition) Maybe have a bot string together the stories. Send reports with apparent return addresses suggesting names that google with the university.
3) By law, every university employee MUST REPORT all allegations, period. ("Title IX", this is not made up)
4) Keep records of all the emails sent.
5) Wait for it...
6) Shonuff, a rape happens, or at least, some girl says it happened.
7) Mail all the media: this rape was reported by ZZZZ in an email sent at XX:XX:XX on YY/YY/YY, and they did nothing about it!
8) lolz. Wnt 21:15, 4 December 2016 (EST)
Catch-up
For the benefit of those who haven't been able to access ED at all for the last few days, due to some cloudflare crap-out, what was the deal with the attack of the sockpuppets that can be seen in recent changes? - Also, could one of the bcrats rm BMO's adminship? It's going nuts atm and isn't monitored well enough to justify not being able to ban it. Mike the Great (talk) 21:45, 10 December 2016 (EDT)
- U can totally ban bmo. admins can be banned they just can unban themselves, which bmo is not set to do iirc. --Mantequilla (talk) 09:34, 11 December 2016 (EST)
- To be more specific, it was Oliver D. Smith, who is so assblasted because he has an article here he decided to spam butthurt edits, and when he couldn't do that, insulting user accounts. We managed to deal with the socks and we now have some title blacklist stuff in place to make further butthurt spam assaults much harder. DarkLordTR --> 19:11, 10 December 2016 (EST)

"Remember that anti-porn Oliver loves to reference pornstars in these names". That is EXACTLY why they are not him. Why would he discredit himself on purpose like this? He has campaigned against porn for years, that is one thing he would never change on. He wouldn't suddenly start creating names based on Peter North or Danny D. He also only has one IP address which is well known. He does not use open proxies to hide behind, even certain admins know this. In short none of these accounts are him. Go and ask him. You should not be pinning these accounts on him because you have no proof they are him. This is someone else having a laugh. Alan Shaw 21:07, 11 December 2016 (EST)

The US government will shut down ED as a "Russian propaganda" or "fake news site"
Both the House and Senate passed the "Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act" because they were pissed that Donald Trump got elected. The law ends freedom of the press and freedom of speech in the USA. Obama will sign this before Trump gets inaugurated so Trump won't be able to block it. Any website or news source not pushing communist propaganda is declared a "Russian propaganda" and "fake news site". I'm really scared this will be the end of free speech and freedom of the press as we know it. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-12-10/senate-quietly-passes-countering-disinformation-and-propaganda-act https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countering_Foreign_Propaganda_and_Disinformation_Act Yipes --FuckAlms 07:58, 12 December 2016 (EST)

- @FuckAlms This is almost right, but I don't think you appreciate American politics. Fake news is not banned by people hurt by fake news, but by people who spread fake news. A businessman who doesn't have a hand in getting his industry banned wouldn't have any pull at all! So Trump buys the fake news, bans fake news, puts a bunch of random jesters in jail, apologizes that there are still workhouses full of russian trolls broadcasting on his behalf more than ever but what can he do, they're unextraditable/too expensive to prosecute/hard to track down and if you want something done you have to sign on to his constitutional amendment to put a monitoring chip in your head so fake news can be spotted when it happens. But lol fake news nuclear war could intervene. I mean shoot, most folks of any political persuasion would love to help Israel and Pakistan nuke each other but how can they help? Well if fake news can do it maybe even Trump will back off banning it. Wnt 14:45, 25 December 2016 (EST)

Business as unusual...
There were a couple of pieces in liberalefty UK twatrag The Guardian earlier this month that left me seriously suspicious that the author had not the faintest clue what she was talking about. You can read them for yourself here (Part I) and here (the sequel).
There's obviously an element of truth in some of it (even if she's embarrassingly behind the curve on gaming a search engine's results) but a lot of what she says looks like bullshit. The bit about the "Are Jews..." autocomplete - a few commenters have pointed out that this doesn't work for them, and I reckon it might be that 'filter bubble' thing backfiring on her. I don't have the technical know-how to explain what's wrong with her reasoning. Any thoughts on this from the cumputar geniuses of ED?
Yes, it has potential, even if it's only as a few pars to illustrate how keen libs are on censorship (by any other name) or how the alt-right are being blown up into huge internet bogeymen. That is, depending on whether the columnist is taking out her ass and whether the explanations are amusing.
TL;DR - is a granny journalist chatting nonsensical crap about the internet again? Sidecar 10:20, 26 December 2016 (EST)
- it's disappointing that the msm has changed their minds about "rededicating" themselves to good journalism and instead will now return to business as usual tyvm. one of those articles uses the term 'post truth' which is certainly ironic considering that this new era could better be described as post-lies. if anyone was publishing fake news it was those six or seven media conglomerates, and at least NYT had a moment of self reflection, now retracted and edited from their apology letter. Godfrey Elfwick's tweet sorta says it all imo:
