The Scunthorpe Conundrum is where a word (perceived by some to be offensive) appears within the confines of a larger word. Many websites have a function/feature which automatically searches for any combination of letters which make up these perceived-to-be-offensive words and replaces some or all of the letters in it with asterisks or other means of obfuscation.

Examples

  • Scunthorpe would thus be rendered S****horpe.
  • Circumstance would be rendered cir***stance.
  • etc
