Oh Crap, I Just Remembered Something

Back on the old ED, because they were constantly trying to ban me, I came up with this one nasty little trick I used to pull. First I would sign up with all the local dial-up ISPs, for like just a month. Most dial-up services do NOT have static IP addies, but rather variable ones, so every time you disconnect and then reconnect it'll give you a new IP addy. So basically what I did was I would create hundreds of throwaway accounts in order to force them to perma-ban...basically the whole IP ranges of entire service providers, thus preventing most of the entire town from ever being able to use ED for anything. It might be prudent to keep a close eye on the IPs of people who are getting banned, to make sure no one is attempting to block out an entire ISP from being able to edit on ED. Further it might be a good idea to utilize cookie tracking, both to hinder the use of proxy accounts as well as to hinder that nasty little trick of mine. --Onideus 22:38, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Merchandising

One way to generate money for the site would be to sell t-shirts, bumper stickers, mouse pads and such through a cookie cutter site like Zazzle. I know they did it on the old ED in a limited capacity (just shirts I believe), but it could be stepped up a notch. If you take it to mean only stuff that mentions or uses ED's name directly in the artwork, well...honestly not many people are gonna be buying the stuff...and that's the point. Not necessarily to ED I suppose, that design is actually based on one of the first humor related images to make the rounds, back around 1995, the original has been in active circulation on the grid for nearly twenty years, almost a quarter century. A lot of stuff *IS* Internet and lulz related...but often only to specific communities, groups, subsets, etc...in this case it would be us "oldbies". It would probably be a good idea to have like descriptions saying who the submitting artists is, the nature of the design, what it's related to, etc, etc. Maybe even have like artist showcases, with the idea to breed competition and getting more people to submit designs. On the whole the more designs the better as far as making money, but like you say, there needs to be some standards and quality control as far as what's allowed and what isn't. Gotta be a bit careful though on that, otherwise you could trigger another Crystal sammich type fiasco, by rejecting something that the majority think should be allowed. Perhaps a voting system of some kind could be used? That's one idea to get around it. As well as a "justification" tag, like what we use on Usenet for new group creation, which likewise could also serve as the before mentioned description. Anyway, I'm just throwing ideas out here, not saying anything should be set in stone, there's lots of different ways it could be done really. --Onideus 01:58, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Icon Tags

I came up with a concept for use on one of my sites that involves tagging kooks with icons that represent the various aspects of their fagottree:

YouTube Profiteering

I put up a couple "video of the now" entries for July and shortly after I got a couple of these:

...which leads me to believe that YouTube might be specifically monitoring the "video of the now" section, looking for material that they can profit off of from the traffic generated from ED. Not just YouTube, but individuals as well might start abusing it, knowing they'll get revenue sharing opportunities by adding any old lame ass video. It might actually be better at some point in the future to directly host the "videos of the now" on ED. I've got a variety of custom Flash based video players I've put together over the years that could be adapted for the job:

There's a mediawiki function that allows us to simply use images from commons. for example, an image I used in my sig a long while ago would not have to be uploaded. typing in [[Image:foucault5.jpg]] would transfer the image automatically, complete with the license and shit. I was wondering whether we should have our own news section, but with the added bonus of ED.
